Hunting season is underway and we have a few tips, tricks and reminders to share with our audience. This month we’ll explore best practices when speaking to landowners.
When seeking out your preferred hunting locations it’s important to understand what kind of land you will be accessing. First determine if your hunting grounds are privately owned, Crown Land or Crown Leased Land.

Private Land + Crown Leased Land
Consider using these tips when talking to landowners to avoid any confusion and to secure a successful hunting location:
- Contact the landowner / steward at least 1 week ahead of intended hunt days. Be sure to provide date ranges of the access area requested.
- Always clarify if you will be granted foot-only access or vehicle / ATV access.
- Clarify if there’s any livestock on the land and where they are typically located.
- Inquire about all gated points on the land and identify your areas of access. Remember best practice gate entry: If the gate is closed, you pass through and close the gate behind you.
- Specify to the lawdowner / steward WHO will be on the land with you. Provide full names and phone numbers. It’s best practice to also supply the landowner with an emergency contact person and their number in case of emergency while you are on their land.
